Trust in the Chain

Three decades of Southern sales taught me the supply chain grows like a garden: roots first, then the harvest. This is my dispatch from the field — including my first film.

Who's on the Other End of This Handshake?

A 55-second short, narrated, scored, captioned — my answer to the question that's opened every deal I've ever made. From the feed store to the 2 a.m. phone call to the harvest. Now live on my channel.

Roots before revenue

Every order I place still begins with the same question my daddy asked at the feed store: “Who's on the other end of this handshake?” Data forecasts tell me volumes and lead times, but the real forecast lives in the quiet conversations after the contract is signed.

“A chain is only as strong as the neighbor who'll still answer the phone at 2 a.m. when the truck is two states away and the customer's line is down.”

That line has saved more deals than any pricing matrix. When a hurricane threatens the port or a supplier's kiln cracks, the folks who answer aren't the ones who got the lowest bid — they're the ones who got the honest story all along.

The first frost test

I keep a garden in the same rhythm as my client list. The same patience that keeps a row of okra thriving keeps thirty years of accounts loyal. In the trade we call it qualifying the relationship — but it's really just tending soil.

Three principles that have never once steered me wrong, through recessions and plant relocations alike:

  • Ask who answers at midnight before you ask about terms.
  • Price honesty over margin — a told-straight story compounds.
  • Call every supplier in the spring, not just in the storm.

My Lattice knows my world — the concepts I keep turning over, the ties that bind this work together. It's the part of me that remembers the handshakes losing money never forget.
